Is Metal Roofing Right For Your Home?

Over the last couple decades metal roofing has become a popular choice among todays homeowners looking for a durable, stylish alternative to standard asphalt shingles.  While many are drawn to its durability and function, is it the right choice for you?  Read on to learn more about the benefits of metal roofing as well as some things to consider when deciding if it is right for your home.

Benefits of Metal Roofing:

All-Around Quality Metal roofs offer many benefits that most consumers are unaware of.  First, they are extremely durable and fire-resistant. They are also are energy-efficient in both the summer and winter months and can increase the value of a home.  Lastly, contrary to popular belief, metal roofs are not susceptible to rusting or corrosion.

Longevity Metal roofing can last two to three times longer than its asphalt counterpart.

Ease of Installation – Because it is lightweight, metal roofing material can often be installed over an existing asphalt roof.  This saves on the labor of stripping the old material while also reducing the amount of waste being sent to the landfill.

Options Galore – Going beyond the standard galvanized finish, metal roofing materials now come in a number of options.  With looks that imitate everything from clay tiles to slate, metal roofing can fit with nearly any home aesthetic.

Things to Consider:

Cost While their longevity and durability far outweighs that of asphalt shingles, metal roofs are often considerably more expensive to install sometimes two to three times the cost.

Climate Metal roofings thickness is measured in gauges; the lower the gauge, the thicker the metal.  A higher, heavy-duty 24 gauge metal should be used in climates that experience high wind, hail, and other severe weather.

Insulation & Noise There is a popular misconception that a metal roof is noisy especially during periods of heavy rain.  While this may be true if there is little barrier between the roof and the home, proper insulation or substrate can eliminate this problem.
