What is LEED Building and Why is It so Important?

Most homeowners want a green home. They want the choices they make in their home’s construction to not only be great for their needs but also smart for the environment. But how do you know that the materials you choose are truly green, sustainable products? This is where LEED building becomes helpful.

So what is LEED? Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a certification rating system devised by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) to evaluate the environmental performance of a building and encourage market transformation towards sustainable design.

The program’s focus is to create a market-driven, focused effort on continuing the trend toward to sustainable building practices. Many types of structures can become LEED certified from homes to hospitals and retail shops. According to their website, LEED is now the most widely used third-party verification for green building, with around 1.85 million square feet being certified daily.

Why is LEED important? This third party certification helps those building or remodeling their home or business make smart choices when it comes to the products they choose to use. Building with products which meet the stringent guidelines of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design helps your building stay on the right track to becoming LEED certified. It also ensures you are using materials which enhance the sustainability and positive global impact of your project.

At Custom Installations, we carry many environmentally-friendly products but few can beat the DaVinci Roofscapes product line. DaVinci roof tiles contribute to the LEED certification process in many valuable ways. They reduce heat islands to minimize their impact on microclimates and surrounding wildlife and human habitats. DaVinci products also assist with water efficient landscaping by enhancing a structure’s captured rain systems further reducing its potable water consumption. Lastly, these roofing materials require less replacement needs than others reducing their impact on landfills. They can also often can be reused. Each of these valuable features add “points” to a structures ability to become LEED certified.
