Residential with upgraded siding exterior

Choosing a good color combination for your home’s exterior can be challenging, considering the fact that it will stay on for many years. While most people look to roof and siding when choosing exterior colors, there is another pairing that merits equal consideration.

In today’s post, local siding contractor Custom Installations shares tips on achieving color harmony between trim and siding.

Check Out the Neighborhood

If you’re not sure where to begin, take a quick drive around the neighborhood and pay attention to the trim and siding on your neighbor’s houses. You should have a general idea of which combinations work and which don’t. More importantly, it helps you set boundaries on your color selection and stops you from overdoing it.

Don’t Force It

We have said many times how the homeowner’s style and taste plays an important role in the final house design. Perhaps you have a favorite color that you want to put in but doesn’t seem to be working; don’t force it if it’s not. Remember that both trim and siding have to harmonize with other elements such as your metal roofing, too. The front entry door is usually independent of the exterior color palette and provides more latitude with its color selection, which makes it a good way to incorporate a favorite color without looking forced.

Trim Is Generally Lighter

The human eye has a tendency to be drawn to lighter colors first, which is why most people choose trim colors that are lighter than the siding. It may not sound as unique, but trim highlights the house’s architectural features. If you would rather not use plain white trim on your home, consider a significantly lighter shade of the siding color.

Try Color Combinations During Different Times of the Day

If possible, ask your siding contractor for samples of both siding and trim combinations. Some color combinations may look good on screen but sometimes won’t be as good during certain times of the day. Place each color pair outdoors where you can see it with the roof, then see how they look in the morning, at noon, in the afternoon, and at dusk. Eliminate color pairs that don’t look good. You can quickly narrow down your choices to one or two pairs, which should ultimately lead you to the right trim and siding combination.
